How to look after
full-grain leather.
Full-grain leather is the most honest material you can use in a shoe. It's also one that rewards attention.
Most shoes are made from corrected-grain leather — the surface is sanded flat and coated with pigment to hide imperfections.
Molont shoes are made from full-grain calf leather. The surface is left completely intact. This is a sign of quality, not imperfection.
After every wear
Wipe the uppers with a soft, slightly damp cloth to remove surface dust and dirt. Let dry naturally, away from direct heat.
Rotate your shoes. Two pairs worn alternately will outlast one pair worn daily.
Shoe trees
Insert cedar shoe trees immediately after removing your shoes. They maintain shape and absorb moisture.
Cedar is preferable to plastic — it absorbs odour and moisture rather than just holding shape.
Conditioning — every 1–2 months
Full-grain leather needs moisture to stay supple. Apply a leather conditioner with a soft cloth, working it in with circular motions.
Before conditioning, brush the shoe to remove any surface dust. Conditioning works better on a clean surface.
Polishing
A wax polish applied with a brush and buffed adds colour depth, shine, and light protection against water and scuffs.
High shine requires patience and multiple thin coats — do not try to do it in one application.
Water and wet weather
If your shoes get wet, allow them to dry naturally at room temperature. Insert shoe trees to hold shape as they dry. Condition once fully dry. Never use a hairdryer.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid storing in plastic bags — leather needs to breathe.
The box your Molonts came in is suitable for storage.
Sole and repairs
The vulcanised rubber sole can be replaced by any cobbler when it wears through. Email support@molont.com before taking them to a cobbler — we can advise on what is possible.
